The Health Benefits of Practicing Gratitude

If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough
— Meister Eckhart

Practicing gratitude can produce many health benefits. It is not simply a trait, but a virtue that can be practiced. One can begin by simply acknowledging the positive things that happen in each day–the positive parts of life. By doing so, gratitude becomes part of one's routines and thought process, thus becoming a powerful health habit.

Expressing gratitude often can reduce depression, lessen anxiety, support heart health and improve sleep, thus enhancing one’s mental wellness and positively affect one’s physical health.

Here’s some ways to incorporate more gratitude:

  • Taking “sabbath” moments: At least 3 minutes a day, take some time to pause and take deep breaths. By doing that, it helps to acknowledge your breaths– the gift of life itself.

  • Write it down: Taking some time to write in a journal, on a bulletin wall, on post it notes– the simple things you're grateful for. It can simply be something that brought you a smile or the things that you have.

Sharing your gratitude: Taking time often to express your gratitude to others. It can simply be a short statement within a conversation with a friend.
